Greenfeast.org is ready to help!

Greenfeast is a grass roots relief aid organization focused on fighting hunger and offering relief and aid to the indigent and those in need. In our efforts we also strive to educate individuals on how to cook, eat and live a healthier lifestyle even when living on a reduced budget or when living through unfortunate circumstances.

So who is Greenfeast?

Greenfeast is a fusion of many different concepts and ideas as our goal is not only to focus on healthy diet and nutrition when offering relief to others but also on education and outreach as well. To address the many different challenges that can come up when trying to create an organization of this kind, we have brought together a group of directors that all bring something uniquely different to the table.

As a business professional, our Executive Director Adam Hirschman's vast experience with business, logistics and supply chain development will give us the opportunity to effectively and efficiently grow Greenfeast so that it is able to serve the many needs it is intended to address while maintaing a much needed efficiency that is always strived for yet sometimes hard to attain when engaging in charitble activities. Our Director of Communicatios Drew Wasserman is responsible for this website and other facets of marketing and research for the organization. Drew brings with him knowledge and experience that offers us a modern approach to spreading our grass roots message and has allowed us to create an identity that truly reflects our mission and our values. Arielle Dachman, our Director of Operations, has a MS in Public Service Management.

There are areas all across this city, state and country that have long been neglected in certain ways, and we aim to address that issue by simply reaching into those communities wherever and whenever we can to lend a helping hand. To some that may seem like a too lofty of a goal but to us it just makes sense, and we here at Greenfeast know that doing right by others is never the wrong thing to do.

There are going to be a lot of bricks required to build the road ahead, so to lay the first brick we are rehabilitating a dilapidated property at 87th and Colfax in the South Chicago Community and turning it into a food pantry, so that the building can serve those living in the community instead of being a burden to them. We know things won't be easy but things that are worth doing rarely are. We are confident that through hard work, cooperation and determination, together we can all accomplish some really amazing things.

So What Can I Do?

Well, there are a few things that would help us out, please take a few moments and choose one or more of the options below:

Newsletters

Greenfeast Newsletter Issue 1

This is the first issue of the Greenfeast Newsletter.  It has news and articles that show and highlight some of our new programs.  Since this is our first issue there is also an introduction page.

Food Pantry Initiative

We are extremely happy to announce that Greenfeast has obtained a property to be used as our very first food pantry. The property is in the South Chicago neighborhood at 8658 S. Colfax and was donated to us to use free of charge on a 10 year lease. The owners have also given us first option to take ownership of the property at anytime during or by the end of the lease, or to renew the lease and continue using the space free of charge.

We are extremely grateful to them for their kindness and generosity and promise to put the property to good use for the community. Our goal is to have the property renovated and operational by Spring/Summer of 2012, using local area contractors and businesses in the effort. Contractors like Cliff, a local small business owner from B&B Construction, who helped do the initial board up, rubbish removal and manicure all the landscaping (which was no small feat . . . the weeds and grass alone on the entire property were almost 5ft-6ft tall when we signed the lease, that is before Cliff and his guys got in there and did their thing).

On emergency notice at no extra charge they were also able to come out and patch and board a 6ft by 3ft hole that had been knocked into the front wall of the property by a vehicle that ran into the building. Their professionalism and willingness to help is inspiring and we look forward to working with them on the rest of the renovations as well.

When Can I Get Involved?

Chicago Green Roofs

Chicago Green Roofs

Extensive Green Roofs usually grow on a 2-6” layer (5-15 cm) of a mineral based mixture of sand, gravel, crushed brick, leca, peat, organic matter, and soil. Plants must be extremely hardy and self sustaining and are usually low.

An in-the-works brewery goes off the grid

The 15,000 square feet of space the Evanses are turning into a brewery is part of the Plant, a former meatpacking facility in Back of the Yards that industrial designer John Edel is refashioning into a vertical farm (it was the subject of a story in the Reader last year).

Thank You For Your Help

First and foremost I want to say thank you to everyone that has helped to make this a reality, from the Directors and Board Members to all those that have pitched in to help lend a hand. I have rarely been a part of something so fulfilling or been involved with such an amazing group of people.

I absolutely believe that there is no reason any man, woman or child should ever have to face a day not knowing where their next meal will come from or whether or not they will have enough to eat, especially in this amazing country that we call home. To that our goal is simple . . . try to feed as many people as humanly possible, as is within our ability to do so. There is much to do and things may not always be easy at times, but I truly look forward to working hand in hand with each and every one of you, to every can of food donated and every dollar raised.
